Your volumetric weight in kg appears instantly. Compare it with the actual weight, the couriers charge whichever is higher.

What Is Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight) is a pricing method used by courier companies. Instead of charging solely on actual weight, they consider how much space a package occupies in their vehicle.

Your courier charges based on whichever is higher, the actual physical weight or the volumetric weight. Understanding this prevents billing surprises.

Actual Weight

The physical weight of the package is measured on a scale in kilograms.

Volumetric Weight

A calculated weight based on package size: L × W × H ÷ 5000. Penalizes bulky, light packages.

Chargeable Weight

Couriers bill the higher of the two: always compare both before shipping.

📐 The Formula
Volumetric Weight
= (L × W × H) ÷ 5000
Sample Calculation

Package: 30cm × 20cm × 15cm

= 30 × 20 × 15 = 9,000 cm³

÷ 5000 = 1.8 kg volumetric weight

Divisor of 5000 is standard for most Indian couriers. Some may use 4000 or 6000.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate volumetric weight?
Multiply the Length, Width, and Height of your package in centimetres, then divide by 5000. The result is the volumetric weight in kilograms. For example, a 30 × 20 × 15 cm package = (30 × 20 × 15) ÷ 5000 = 1.8 kg.
Why do couriers use volumetric weight?
Couriers have limited space in their vehicles, aircraft, and warehouses. A large but lightweight package takes up as much space as a heavier one. Volumetric pricing ensures couriers are compensated for the space a package occupies, not just its actual mass.
What is the difference between actual weight and volumetric weight?
Actual weight is the physical weight measured on a scale. Volumetric weight is a calculated value based on package dimensions. Couriers charge the higher of the two, so a 500g pillow in a 40×40×40 cm box might be billed at 12.8 kg (the volumetric weight).
Does the divisor (5000) change for all couriers?
The divisor can vary by courier and mode of transport. Most Indian domestic couriers use 5000, but air freight often uses 6000, and some carriers use 4000. Always check your courier's specific terms. Shipway's platform auto-applies each partner's correct divisor during rate calculation.
